As web spam and automate bot traffic increases, the constant battle to combat it has shifted. To that end, Workhorse is officially migrating all clients from Google reCAPTCHA to Cloudflare Turnstile.

We plan on implementing this change at no charge to our clients over the next few months.

FAQs about the Turnstile migration

What is Cloudflare Turnstile?

Turnstile is Cloudflare’s drop-in replacement for CAPTCHA. It uses non-interactive methods such as behavioral signals, client integrity checks, and machine learning to validate that a real person is visiting your site.

Does Turnstile affect user experience?

Generally, Cloudflare Turnstile does not affect customer or user experience. If a user’s behavior appears suspicious, they may have to check a box. They will never need to select all the fire hydrants or otherwise complete confusing challenges.

Doesn’t Google reCaptcha v3 improve over previous versions of reCaptcha by not requiring user interaction?

Yes it does, however in our experience it is much less effective at stopping spam form submissions and other malicious traffic. In addition, it requires a Google Cloud Console project, which is part of why we are migrating now.

Why is Workhorse transitioning to Turnstile now?

For two reasons. First, Google is forcing all reCaptcha users to move to paid Google Cloud projects. While there is a free tier that may work for many clients, given that we were unhappy with reCaptcha’s performance against bots in recent years, it made sense to transition to a more powerful alternative.

Will Cloudflare Turnstile cost?

No, Workhorse is a Cloudflare Enterprise customer and we have sufficient Turnstile licenses to cover all of our web hosting clients

Are there privacy implications of migrating to Cloudflare Turnstile?

Yes, Cloudflare Turnstile is a more privacy-focused alternative to Google reCaptcha that does not track users across the web.
